Protecting Okefenokee

Read about sisters call on Chemours and Sherwin-Williams to reject proposed mining project near the fragile swamp.

The Felician Sisters and Green Century Capital Management are urging Chemours and Sherwin-Williams to reject a proposed titanium mining project near Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp. The mining project, led by Twin Pines Minerals LLC, awaits state environmental permits. The Felician Sisters and Green Century, successful in securing a temporary commitment from Chemours in 2022, now push for a permanent rejection of the mining venture. Sherwin-Williams is targeted due to its role in the titanium supply chain for products like paint. Twin Pines dismisses the shareholder action, asserting its determination to proceed. The Okefenokee, a critical freshwater wetland, faces ecological risks from the proposed mining, prompting public opposition and calls for permanent protection. Despite over 100,000 public comments opposing the mine, both companies are yet to respond to the pressure.

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
