I was in formation with the Franciscan friars back in the 1980s. I spent the summer of 1985 at the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University in New York. There were four Felician sisters there that summer: Sisters Pauline and Nora from the former Livonia Province and Sisters Goretti and Dorothy from Canada. The thing I remember most about them was their spirit of joy. They embodied the Franciscan charism of harmony, with the Church, with their brothers and sisters, and with God. They were also deeply committed to their apostolates. Even after all these years those qualities still stand out for me. I’m no longer in religious life, but the life lessons I learned from people like these Felician Sisters helped form me into the man I am today.
