Empowering Women Around the World

Sister Maryann Agnes Mueller attends the 68th Annual Commission on the Status of Women

Sister Maryann Agnes Mueller attended the 68th Annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), the largest annual gathering at the United Nation on gender equality and women’s empowerment. This year, the gathering drew 14,000 women from nearly every corner of the globe, converging for a two-week session at the UN’s headquarters in New York.

The central theme of the meeting was accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective. Sister Maryann was among a group of ten Franciscans and individuals with Franciscan values invited to attend by Franciscans International, which has offices at both the UN headquarters in New York and Geneva.

During her time at the commission, Sister Maryann found inspiration in the multitude of young women attending whose profound knowledge and advocacy for their respective causes left a lasting impression on her.

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
