Celebrating 50 Years of Earth Day

Sr. Mary Jean Sliwinski reminds us of the importance of Earth Day, on the 50th anniversary of the holiday.

The first Earth Day was held in 1970 and today it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The day is meant to call into awareness the need for the environmental protection of our planet. Today, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 190 countries.

Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical, On Care for Our Common Home, the Felician Sisters of North America have been carefully considering our impact on the earth and are taking steps to make changes and to learn more about the natural world in order to appreciate it more. Below are some ways you can join us:

  • Consider using a refillable bottle from your tap or filtered water pitcher.
  • Take a walk outside and spend time in nature, without headphones, listening, seeing . . . taking the world in with your senses. What creatures and plant growth do you see? Consider that we need to leave enough world for them to live in too.

Visit the Earth Day Network website and learn more about plastic pollution, species and habitat preservation, this year’s anniversary campaign and much more!

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
