History of the Convent
Our Lady of the Angels Province in Enfield, CT was established in 1932 as a division of the Lodi province. In 1933, the Felician Sisters acquired the 32-acre Longview estate, including the Orrin Thompson mansion which served as the convent for the next 25 years. As the province grew, a two-story building and a three-story annex were added in 1938, followed by a new motherhouse completed in 1957. The original infirmary later became the common novitiate for the North American provinces, while the annex housed Our Lady of the Angels Academy until its closure in 1988. In 2009, the annex was transformed into St. Francis House, an affordable living community for residents aged 55 and older. In 2016, Enfield Montessori School relocated from across the street, becoming an integral part of this intergenerational campus.
“God’s Marvelous Deeds”
The Felician Sisters in New England
Written by: Sister Constance Marie Tomyl, CSSF
“God’s Marvelous Deeds” tells the story of the Felician Sisters in New England and eastern New York from 1976 to 2009, a time of significant change for the congregation and the Church. Through stories of the sisters who taught, cared for the sick and served their communities in countless ways, the book celebrates their faith and commitment to the Felician mission. It traces their journey of hope through changing times and declining numbers, culminating in the establishment of Our Lady of Hope Province in 2009. It honors the many Sisters whose lives and service continue to bear witness to God’s marvelous deeds.
